Africa Is Not a Charity Campaign. Africa Is a Continent of Power, Beauty and Possibility.
Africa is beautiful.
It is a continent of extraordinary cultures, magnificent landscapes, ancient civilisations, global cities, creative industries, technological innovation and immense human potential.
Yet, for generations, much of the outside world has been shown an incomplete picture of Africa—one dominated by poverty, conflict and helplessness. These challenges exist and must never be ignored. But they do not define an entire continent of 54 countries, thousands of communities and more than a billion individual lives.
Africa is not one story.
Africa is not a stereotype.
Africa is not merely a charity-marketing opportunity.
Africa is history, enterprise, architecture, art, fashion, cinema, science, music and innovation. It is farmers, engineers, educators, entrepreneurs, artists, inventors and leaders building their own futures.
A New Narrative for Africa
Humans of Our World Foundation, in partnership with Hollywood Insider, created Rebrand Africa to challenge outdated representations and help present a more complete, truthful and dignified portrait of the continent.
Our purpose is not to pretend that hardship does not exist. It is to reject the idea that hardship is the only African story worth telling.
We will celebrate Africa’s glorious history while introducing audiences to the innovators, businesses, cities, cultural leaders and communities shaping its present and future.
Africa should not be viewed exclusively through the eyes of outsiders. African people must be recognised as the authors, leaders and protagonists of their own stories.
The Africa the World Must See
Africa is home to the world’s youngest population and is emerging as a major force in renewable energy, technology and creative enterprise.
The African Continental Free Trade Area is bringing together a market of approximately 1.3 billion people across 55 countries, creating one of the world’s most ambitious economic integration projects.
Across the continent:
- Entrepreneurs are transforming finance through mobile money and financial technology.
- Engineers and scientists are developing solutions in robotics, medicine, agriculture, aviation and clean energy.
- Filmmakers, musicians, artists and fashion designers are influencing global culture.
- Rapidly developing cities are becoming centres of commerce, architecture and innovation.
- African businesses are building products and services for both local and international markets.
- Young leaders are creating new opportunities while challenging inherited systems and assumptions.
Between 2019 and 2022 alone, more than 160 million Africans gained access to broadband internet. Digital payments, mobile education, online businesses and technology-led public services continue to expand across the continent.
This is not a continent waiting to be rescued. It is a continent already creating, leading and transforming.
What Rebrand Africa Will Do
Through films, articles, interviews, educational initiatives and partnerships with media organisations and schools, Rebrand Africa will:
- Challenge misleading and one-dimensional stereotypes.
- Celebrate Africa’s civilisations, kingdoms and cultural heritage.
- Profile contemporary African innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders.
- Showcase the continent’s cities, architecture, fashion, art and natural beauty.
- Promote stories created with African voices rather than imposed upon them.
- Help young people around the world understand Africa in its full complexity.
- Encourage ethical humanitarian storytelling based on dignity, accuracy and partnership.
Dignity Before Exploitation
Human suffering should never be manipulated to create a profitable fundraising image.
Responsible humanitarian work must respect the dignity, capability and agency of the people it represents. Communities should never be reduced to photographs of suffering while their achievements, aspirations and voices are ignored.
When assistance is genuinely needed, it should be delivered transparently, responsibly and in partnership with the people affected.
Compassion and respect must exist together.
Africa Is More
Yes, communities in parts of Africa face poverty, inequality, conflict and injustice—but hardship exists on every continent.
Africa’s challenges deserve serious attention. So do its achievements.
We want the world to see the complete Africa: its beauty and complexity, its history and future, its struggles and triumphs, its traditions and transformations.
Africa is flourishing.
Africa is innovating.
Africa is creating.
Africa is leading.
Africa is more—and it is time the world saw the full story.
Join Rebrand Africa
We invite educators, journalists, filmmakers, artists, researchers, businesses and community leaders across Africa and around the world to help us tell stories that replace stereotypes with truth, dignity and understanding.
